How to Celebrate Pride in the Office

The upcoming weeks are not short of great reasons to celebrate with your team again - here are our top tips for how to celebrate Pride with your team!

Pride is about educating others and celebrating how far the LGBTQ+ community has come. There is still a long way to go but every step counts when striving for equality.

See our tips below on how to celebrate Pride in the office!

What does Pride Month mean?

Pride Month is the annual celebration of LGBTQ diversity  (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer), which takes place every year in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots which occurred in June 1969.

The protests changed gay rights for a lot of people around the world, which is celebrated yearly in June.  Many events are held in June to recognise LGBTQ people all over the world. Although the event started in the US, Pride Month is usually celebrated internationally!

Why should you celebrate Pride Month in your office?

There are many reasons why you should celebrate Pride Month in your workplace: mainly to provide awareness of the ongoing LGBTQ rights issues in the world. Violence and hate crimes towards LGBTQ people are on the increase, with a large number of crimes unreported across the world.

According to an article by the Diversity Trust, it's estimated up to 80% of hate crimes and incidents are unreported.  Whilst in the UK huge reforms have been made in the past 50 years, with legal and social changes, there are still many points to work towards to provide full equality.

What can you do to show support?

It can be as simple as providing recognition for Pride Month - holding an event for you and your colleagues to discuss LGBTQ history and providing an event to be able to discuss why the pride celebrations are in place.

A few ideas for your celebration:

  • Social Media posts and support - use LinkedIn or Instgram to show your support or highlight any Pride events your company are holding
  • Encourage your team to discuss pride month, and the culture and background of LGBTQ history, even if you don't have an organised event
  • Hold an event in the office - you could order some simple Pride cupcakes, or have an organised lunch for the team to come together! (COVID-19 permitting, of course)
  • If you're still working from home, hold a quiz or have an external speaker to come to virtually discuss the history of Pride Month
